The Marshfield Blue Jays beat Springfield Hillcrest 28-7 on Friday night to mark 3-1 on the season.
Marshfield started the scoring after a great defensive stand set up the offense with a short field. The Jays took over at the Hillcrest 30 after a huge sack on third down and a high snap on the punt attempt.
From there junior QB Carson Adams led the Jays on a nine-play 30 yard drive capped off with a 22 yard TD pass to sophomore Brayden Jenson. The Jays took the lead 7-0 late in the first quarter. On the ensuing possession Hillcrest was driving. They took over on their own 35 and had some momentum after a 21 yard reception from QB Braxton Tindle to Aiden Meyers had them set up first and 10 from the Jays 35. On that play it looked as if Meyers may take it all the way, but Brayden Hicks saved the TD by forcing him out of bounds. On the very next play Carter Pruitt stripped the ball from Tindle and Kallen O’Dell jumped on it ending the Hillcrest drive.
Three plays later Adams hit Talon Funk out of the backfield for a 50 yard completion all the way down to the Hillcrest 6 yard line. Hillcrest stopped the Jays on the next three plays forcing a fourth and goal from the 3. Once again it was Adams arm throwing a rifle shot between defenders finding Jenson for his second touchdown of the night. The Jays were up 14-0 with 10:04 left in the first half.
With :26 seconds left in the first half. Hillcrest threatened again. First and 10 from the Jays 12 yard line. Then comes Brayden Hicks to intercept a pass in the endzone to kill the drive. Marshfield goes into halftime with a 14-0 lead.
In the second half, Adams hit Case Steinbach for 44 yards down to the Hillcrest 4 and Tyce Jones took it in from there, putting the Jays up 20-0.
Hillcrest got their only score of the night with a 15 yard TD run from QB Braxton Tindle, making the score 20-7.
Late in the fourth quarter the Jays D once again stopped Hillcrest on fourth down and Marshfield got the ball on the Hornet 34. Carter James went the distance in an :8 second one-play drive. Adams to Carter James on the two point conversion made the final score Marshfield 28 Hillcrest 7.
