Wildcats Slice their way to Sectionals

Posted

Making quite the racquet this season was The Logan-Rogersville Girls’ Tennis Team as they lobbed and clawed to sectionals. The Lady Wildcats are the only tennis team representing Webster County. The team has taken on schools from all over Missouri, including Lee Summit, Joplin, Bolivar, and Helinas Catholic from Jefferson City.

“You never know what our competitors are going to be like,” says Sarah Worsham, Head Coach of both girls’ and boys’ tennis teams. She has been leading the team for 20 seasons. Before that, she played tennis for Rogersville back when she was in high school.

The team Worsham led this season had strong competitors, making for a fun and exciting ‘22 season.

Highlights for this season include Junior Caitlyn Archer winning the Singles District Championship. Archer went on to sectionals, falling in the first round against the eventual State Champion Aanya Singh from Clayton High.

The Wildcats additionally had two double-teams that fought their way through districts. One group consisted of Juniors Raleigh Powell and Lydia Coryell who finished third in districts.

The other team, consisted of Senior Nikki Wood and Junior Alex Wubbena, the pair would finish second in districts earning them a spot in sectionals. Unfortunately, the duo would lose the tiebreaker in sectionals after three intense sets—overall, a great way to end the season.

“The goal is always to win districts. Going into this season, we have had a pretty good run and accomplished our goal; everything else is just extra and exciting,” reflected Worsham.

Despite all the challenges against the girls’ tennis team, they still played this season with smiles on their faces. So if you missed the overhead shots and serves this time, fear not! You can rally for The L-R Boys’ Tennis Team, who start in the upcoming spring.
