Stay safe during hunting season

Posted

As the leaves fall across Missouri, hunters from all over will participate in deer and turkey seasons. Everyone, young and old, hunting or not, can enjoy the autumn season. With that in mind, the Missouri Department of Conservation has released a statement and tips reminding folks to be safe.

“Safety while hunting is ultimately the responsibility of the hunter,” said MDC Hunter Education Coordinator Justin McGuire. “Hunters must clearly identify their targeted game animals before even putting their fingers on the triggers of their firearms or before drawing their bows when archery hunting. They must also be aware of what is behind their targets and should never shoot at movement or sound.”

He would continue with helpful tips for non-hunters wanting to go out and enjoy the outdoors, which include the following:

*Wear bright clothing such as a bright orange hat, jacket, or even pack to be more visible and avoid earth-toned or animal colors such as browns or tans.

*If you are bringing a dog out, place a bright orange vest or bandana on them and keep them leashed.

*Wild Games are typically active during the early morning through late afternoon hours. Most hunters will be active at the same time. Be cautious of your visibility, especially during times when the light is dim.

*When going outdoors, let other people know where you are going and when to expect you to come home. If going to an area, stay on the designated trails as they are designed to keep the public safe while also protecting sensitive habitats.

*If you hear shooting, make yourself known and raise your voice to let hunters know you are in the area. Once the hunters are aware of you, avoid conflict and don’t make any unnecessary noise.

To find out when and where hunting seasons occur, visit the MDC’s website atmo.gov/hunting-trapping, or if you plan to visit a conservation area and want to see if hunting will be going on there, visit the MDC’s Places to Go feature at mo.gov/discover-nature/places.

Follow these tips, and everyone can enjoy Autumn safely.
