It is a new year, and the Marshfield High School Speech and Debate Team members have been seeing success. Since starting competitions in October, the students have been bringing home trophies, some being 1st place.
"My success this semester has been shocking for me, said Abi Frazier, MHS Freshmen and Speech and Debate Member. "Speech and Debate have shown me a talent I never realized I had. It built my confidence, delivery, and understanding of generational problems that needed to be said. Next semester, I'm planning on going to almost every tournament I can get into and focusing on doing some debate."
"It has been great being back in Marshfield Schools after graduating in 2011. We have had a wonderful time in competition and bonding as a team," said Chasity Hance, MHS Speech and Debate Coach.
Each competition they participate in brings lots of growth and some laughs.
"We are the weird kids. We speak to walls for fun," said Ian Thompson, MHS Junior.
After the winter break, Marshfield High School will host a speech and debate tournament, which has not been done since 2012. If readers are interested in judging in the tournament, even if it's a few rounds, reach out to the Speech and Debate Coach, Chasity Hance, via email at chasity.hance@mjays.us. It will be a busy time for the team as they will compete in January and February—two district tournaments in March, followed by the State tournament in April.
