Elementary book swap demonstrates reduce, reuse, recycle

Posted

Hubble Elementary celebrated Earth Day with a memorable exchange… a book exchange that is. Kindergarten teachers Amber Long and Melanie Cantrell organized the first Earth Day Book Swap last year and took it school-wide for students in Preschool-First Grade for the 2022 Earth Day.

“We hope to continue this every year,” said Long. “I asked my class if they would want to do this again and I got a double thumbs-up.”

The reduce, reuse, recycle effort was made by parents who were asked to send used books with students to swap. With a larger than expected turnout, over 700 books were supplied.

Long’s class weren’t the only ones who enjoyed the demonstration. According to Janet Gonzales, her kindergarteners were ecstatic over the event.

“We had a big turnout for this book swap and the kids are loving it. They’re really excited,” Gonzales said. “It’s great because they know that not everything has to be thrown out… a physical activity like this seems to stick with the kids more and I even had a student who was hugging their book, saying they were going to keep it forever.”

“If we put these things into action they’re more likely to continue doing that,” added Long. “That was the main push behind holding this activity. What better message to send on Earth Day than the three R’s. It’s just a plus that they thought it was so fun!”
