With the holidays upon us, people want to watch Christmas movies. You know the classics, Rudolph, Frosty, the entire catalog of Hallmark. So this year, might I suggest a few films to break tradition and perhaps start something different?
For December, I will introduce movies that should be considered Christmas movies and starting with the one that created lots of family debate, Die Hard, released in 1988.
Despite what I said in our Marshfield Mail TikTok, Die Hard is a Christmas movie. What makes it a Christmas movie is based on two factors.
First is the premise; Bruce Willis plays John McClane, a cop from New York who flies to Los Angelos to visit his family. At the same time, he attends his estranged wife's office Christmas party, where terrorists take over and must save everyone.
Second, the movie reminds the audience that it is Christmas time. Less than two minutes into the film, an announcement is heard, wishing that passengers have a Merry Christmas. Christmas decorations can be seen throughout the film, and the characters' dialogue sprinkles Christmas references.
Outside of these factors, the movie itself is a solid action flick. You understand each character's motivation; the music is excellent, the actors are phenomenal, including Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, and the fights are intense. It is a great film that you know without a doubt is from the '80s.
Now there is swearing, brief nudity, and blood, so I do not recommend playing this film if there are children around. However, if you want to change up your Christmas holiday-watch list, I suggest this stocking stuffer.
Die Hard can be watched on Starz, Amazon Prime, and Hulu and rented on other streaming platforms and gets my rating of four coconuts out of five.
I hope everyone enjoys the holidays, and please be safe! Until the next issue, I hope you all have a good rest of your shift.
