Cool beans at the library

Posted

The local library may be hearing more giggles than usual on May 4. The Webster County Library is planning its first ever “S.T.E.A.M. ON!” event focusing on both engineering and delicious jelly beans.

The Jelly Bean Engineering event will be held at 219 W. Jackson Street from 10-11 a.m.. Kids ages 6-11 are invited to join in on a jelly bean activity focused on the elements of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics).

“It's gonna be our first STEAM project and the kids think they're gonna come in and eat jelly beans and build things,” laughed Leah Shelby, Webster County Library Employee and S.T.E.M. Event Organizer. “But really I'm gonna teach them about geometry… I am really excited about it.”

The kids will be able to test their skills and build a number of jelly bean structures, with the opportunity to snack on a few.

“I think that you learn through play and I'm a kinesthetic learner. It's good to give them something hands on,” explained Shelby. “It’s like a threefold. The kids are creating, they're designing, and engineering. And they get some jelly beans.”

The library plans to host a series of STEAM. inspired events which are open to both children ages 6-11 and 12-17. Older kiddos will have the chance to create a “magical” painting using common supplies in a scientific way on May 18, kicking off summer in a fun and educational way.

The STEAM activities take place the first and third Wednesday of every month, however, space is limited and the library recommends to pre-register online at eventzilla.net. The link is posted on the Webster County Library’s Facebook page.
