Carjacking ends in pursuit, crash

Posted

Marshfield police officers have made an arrest following two carjackings and a pursuit that ended in a crash. On Monday, Oct. 4 suspect Shawn Hougardy, 46, allegedly jumped in an unoccupied, running vehicle that was on W Highway and tried to get away. However, the owner caught him before he could drive off and pulled the suspect out of the vehicle.

“The suspect then ran across I-44 towards Orscheln,” explained Marshfield Police Chief Doug Fannen. “Just a few minutes later there was a citizen that was going inside Casey’s on the Spur for a cup of coffee and the same suspect jumped in his car and drove off.”

From there, officers were looking for the suspect and were able to track his movement in the vehicle via Onstar before getting into a brief pursuit.

“The suspect headed north down South Buffalo and couldn’t negotiate the turn at Maple, skidding across the road and into multiple vehicles parked at a Marshfield residence,” added Fannen.

When Hougardy crashed into the parked cars, he rammed the SUV into the garage, leaving damage on at least two of the homeowner's vehicles.

A foot pursuit ensued but the suspect was able to evade MPD until the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 5 when he was arrested and transported to the Webster County Jail. Court is set for Wednesday, Oct. 6.

Felony charges were filed Tuesday for tampering with a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident including property damage exceeding $1,000 and resisting arrest.  Hougardy is also on the registered sex offender list. The Marshfield Mail will have more on this story as it develops.
