An unexpected trip

Posted

We have often heard the expression that you can not put a price tag on happiness. Such was the case for one resident of Webco Manor, who got one more opportunity to do something he loved… truck driving.

No, he did not actually get to drive, but rather, but he got the opportunity to ride along with a fellow truck driver one last time.

Don Letzig is a resident of Webco Manor. When he was not spending time with his family, he was on the road as a truck driver. He started driving when he was 17, went for O&S Trucking, and officially retired in 2010. He spent a total of 55 years out on the open road. He spends his days talking about time out on the road to anyone who listens. But who could have predicted the following events that would unfold for him?

Enter Trucker G, a fellow truck driver who, with his wife, started posting on social media such as Facebook and YouTube to help give knowledge to new truck drivers.

“I didn’t start using social media to take payments or nothing,” said Trucker G. “I started to actually help other drivers. I get tired of new drivers not being taught properly. I made a social media platform, a place where new drivers could go and not be judged or belittled for not knowing what they should know because they are not being taught right.”

Their platform is not only a place of learning but also a place to shine a more positive light on the world of trucking, with one of the best ways being to spread holiday cheer. During the holidays, Trucker G and his family do events called Trucker Holidays, which include going around to truck stops, feeding fellow drivers during Thanksgiving, and giving stockings and gifts at Christmas. Every year, the Gs also adopt nursing homes where they will go by and deliver gifts to the senior residents. This year, the Gs adopted Marshfield Care Center, Webco Manor, and The Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon.

While visiting Webco Manor, the staff told the Gs about Letzig, the only truck driver resident in their care, who loved telling stories of trucks and his travels.

“My wife looked at me and said, ‘We have got to give this man a ride,’ and so we made it happen,” explained Trucker G. “We have done this before where we drove from Texas to Nebraska for one gentleman who had cancer. He was no longer able to drive, and his last wish was to take one final ride.”

On a mild Sunday morning on Dec. 24, Trucker G, Mrs. G, and their son Little G came out and gave Letzig a Christmas gift he was not expecting.

“God put us in the right place at the right time for that to happen,” said Mrs. G. “We’re very blessed to have the ride happen for Don. When he first came out he was viewing the truck but when he realized that we were going to help him get in the truck. He got in that passenger seat and kept grabbing that door wanting to make sure it was shut tight.”

That ride will be another incredible story he will get to tell everyone.

“It’s the least I could do for the service he did feeding the country for so many years,” said Trucker G.
