This past weekend my father celebrated 60 years of being alive. Friends and family gathered to join the celebration, which was fun. I was told about the party a few weeks in advance, and I have been thinking about life this whole time.
Those thoughts included how Dad must feel being alive for so long. What are all the experiences he has gone through? How will everyone remember my Dad? Will I even get to that age? What will people think of me?
I admit some of those thoughts are morbid, but if we are honest, we have all thought about mortality. Life has a way of making you stop sometimes and reflect.
Some out there may think a 30-something-year-old like myself has no room to discuss mortality. I have not "really" experienced life yet, and I'm so young I can't possibly understand. Others may share the same thought I do, which is all life, regardless of age, matters. Your experiences are just as meaningful as mine.
We may not like it, but we are only on this dirt ball we call home for a short time. Eventually, we will all leave this mortal realm, which makes me wonder how people will remember each other.
Something to think about next time you get upset at a service worker, post something online, or say something to a loved one. "Is this how I want people to remember me?"
It reminds me of Shinedown's lyrics to "How Did You Love?" if you get the chance, I highly recommend listening. The chorus goes like this:
