This Halloween season, the Marshfield Community Theatre is bringing you something old and something new.

“We are currently producing Carrie: The Musical, based on the iconic story by Stephen King,” shared an excited Kelby Lorenz, Director of Carrie and Director of Outreach for Marshfield Community Theatre.

“We chose this show because it’s October; we are doing it Halloween weekend. It seemed like a really good spooky show, but when I read the script, it tells a really incredible story,” reflected Lorenz. “One of the things that I love about this show and the way that it’s interpreted is that it’s a closed loop-we end where we start. We got to really play with the idea of how long have we been stuck in this loop…and how long have we been trying to stop the destruction.”

“It’s a cool concept to play with-around the idea of trauma, how it stays with us…and how traumatic moments can really impact the way we interact with each other,” expressed Lorenz. “It really centers on that theme-what does it cost to be kind?”

The cast includes around 16, with most actors new to MCT, including a mix of MSU students and brand-new actors. The production team includes Lorenz as Director, Nico Jenkins as Assistant Director, Linley Wilson as Music Director, Miliani Kloster as Choreographer, and Toni Lorenz as Production Manager.

“It’s been super fun,” shared Lauren Knight, a Missouri State student playing Carrie White. “I haven’t done a lot of roles where I’m a lead- it’s been a bit of a change. It’s been fun to get to know this character. She’s been a bit of a challenge…I’ve learned to be more vulnerable on stage. (This show) tells a really good story for our time and how bullying really impacts people.”

The show performs Halloween weekend, October 29 & 30 at 7:00 pm, and October 31, with some additional uniqueness. October 29 is Student Night; all students with a student ID will get $5 off their tickets. On October 30, health professionals will be on site to talk about some of the show’s themes, and guests are welcome to speak. Then, on October 31, an adult prom will start at 8:30 before the show. Come dressed to win Prom King or Queen, eat snacks, and dance before the show starts at 10:00 pm. Additional ticket and show information can be found on the MCT website at: https://www.marshfieldtheatre.org/tickets

As a director, Lornez expressed excitement about the opportunity to direct this show and tell an old story in a new way. “It’s true to the Stephen King story-but it’s a completely new take on it. Even if you know the story, you’re going to have a lot of fun watching the show.”
