Marshfield launches first-ever High School Tennis Program

Posted

The courts at Rotary Park will be busier than ever this fall, as Marshfield High School debuts its first-ever tennis program. Head Coach Jarrett Teel, a first-year teacher at Marshfield who played tennis at Evangel University and previously attended Forsyth High School, is leading the new program.

Marshfield was the last school in its conference to add tennis, and Teel said the team is eager to finally join in the competition. “It’s exciting that we get to be like—we’re the last team in the conference that didn’t have it. So it’s nice to be able to join those teams and compete for a conference title,” he said.

The girls’ season begins this fall, with practices having started over the summer. The Lady Jays will travel to West Plains for their first match on September 2, and the historic first home match is scheduled for September 4 at Rotary Park against Forsyth, starting at 4 p.m. Teel noted that seating at the park will be bring-your-own-chair, a common setup at many area schools. Matches generally run until 7 or 8 p.m., giving fans time to catch the action even after work.

The boys’ season will follow in the spring, with Teel also serving as coach. For now, the spotlight is on the Lady Jays as they take the court for the first time in school history.

“We’re excited to start playing against some teams,” Teel said. “It’s going to be fun to get this program underway.”
