Friday Night Lights Preview: Marshfield

Posted

Marshfield is getting fired up for another season of Bluejays on the gridiron.

This year, the Bluejays return some familiar faces to the offensive side who will continue to be cornerstones of the team, while also welcoming the challenge of an almost entirely new defense. As the season approaches and spots are filled, there is only one question left: who will fill the cleats of past quarterback Bryant Bull?

According to Marshfield's head coach Cody Bull, the entire squad is amped for a big season. After finishing last season with a .500 record, the ‘Jays are looking to start strong with the first game against Lamar on Friday, Aug. 25.

With a lot of familiar talent, it’s safe to say that R.A. Barr will be racked with excitement for the year as six offensive starters return this season for the Bluejays.

“Our offense this year begins with running back Davyion Harris,” said Coach Bull. “Davyvion is a two-year starter who is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. We also return Tyler Young and Marcus Gritts, who were major parts of our passing game last season, and they’ve only improved in the off-season.”

Harris walked away from last season with All-Big 8, All-SWMO, and All-District honors after scoring 12 TDs with 1,200 rushing yards. The 5’11” "flash on the field" hopes to continue to blaze a trail of victory as the coming season approaches.

Young, tight end, and Gritts, wide receiver, also came out of 2022 with All-Big 8 and All-SWMO honors. Each recorded 5 TDs on the season, with Young stacking up over 400 receiving yards.

“We only return Brayden Hicks as a starter on the defensive side at safety,” said Coach Bull. “Carter Pruitt gained valuable experience at linebacker last year, and will step into a leadership role this season. Joey Tackett will return with plenty of Friday night experience and an interception against Rogersville last season.”

With Bryant Bull attending Pitt State, the quarterback position is open for any who think they can handle being the signal caller. The process for choosing the new starting quarterback has already begun for Coach Bull.

“Our quarterback will be determined in fall camp. We’ve narrowed it down to three incredibly talented young men in Tyce Jones, Carson Adams, and Logan Kisner," Bull added. "I’m excited to watch these guys compete for a spot they’re all equally hungry for.”

Fall camp at Bolivar starts this week. Fans will need to mark their calendars for Sept. 1, the first home game of the season against McDonald County, who sent the 'Jays home in last year’s conference tournament.

Coach Bull will be assisted this season by assistant coaches Matt Holt, Roy Kaderly, Paul Lewis, Cecil Bratton, Eli Hungerford, and Jason Broyles and William Pate.
