More than 50 Webster County children left a recent back-to-school event with more than just school supplies. They also learned a skill that could one day save a life.
The event, sponsored by Jordan Valley Community Health Center, brought together community organizations to help families prepare for the new school year. The Webster County Health Unit was one of the participating agencies.
Scott Allen, Webster County Health Department administrator and county health officer, said one of the biggest highlights was hands-only CPR training led by an American Heart Association team member who works with the health department.
"When you think about how many children in Webster County live with or spend time with their grandparents, having another 50 or more kids who know how to respond during a cardiac emergency is a huge thing," Allen said. "It means there are more people who can help save a life until first responders arrive."
The health department also handed out school supplies and worked with Jordan Valley to help families stay on track with childhood vaccinations before classes begin.
Allen said vaccines remain one of the best ways to reduce serious illness, even though they don't prevent every sickness.
"It's kind of like wearing a seat belt," he said. "You can still be in a car crash, but you're much more likely to come out of it safely."
Children who attended the event also received a passport that encouraged them to visit different booths, learn about community resources and take part in activities. After completing the passport, they earned a discount on a new pair of school shoes from a Springfield shoe store.
Allen said that opportunity can mean a great deal for many local families.
"For many families in Webster County, a brand-new pair of shoes is a big deal," he said. "Being able to go back to school with new shoes can make a real difference in a child's confidence, self-esteem and overall mental wellness."
