The Webster County Health Unit has received the prestigious 2025 Gold WIC Breastfeeding Award of Excellence from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, placing it among only nine counties in Missouri to earn the honor.
The award recognizes local WIC agencies that excel in supporting breastfeeding mothers and babies through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Honorees are selected based on exemplary practices in peer counseling, staff training, and building strong community partnerships.
“This recognition reflects the dedication of our WIC team and our commitment to promoting breastfeeding as a key component of maternal and child health,” said Martha Gehrke, WIC Coordinator for the Webster County Health Unit. “We are proud to support families in Webster County by helping them give their babies the best possible start in life.”
Breastfeeding offers a range of health benefits for both mothers and infants and is considered a vital part of early childhood nutrition and development. The Webster County Health Unit’s WIC program provides breastfeeding education, one-on-one counseling, peer support, and access to resources such as breast pumps.
Health unit officials credit the award to their hands-on approach, strong community engagement, and ongoing commitment to the well-being of local families.
