For many families, a visit to McDonald’s is a simple part of everyday life. For others, it represents something far deeper, a moment of comfort, connection and hope during the most difficult chapters of their lives.
That mission will once again be highlighted as MCTJ Night returns, coinciding with the Share A Heart Campaign, which runs Jan. 29 through Feb. 28 at participating McDonald’s locations. Together, the annual efforts raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks, helping families stay close when their children need them most.
At the heart of MCTJ Night is TJ, whose story has become inseparable from the event itself.
TJ’s early life was shaped by medical challenges that required extended hospital care, placing his family in the unfamiliar and overwhelming world of doctors, procedures and long nights filled with uncertainty. During that time, Ronald McDonald House Charities provided his family with a place to stay near the hospital, a welcoming and supportive environment that allowed them to remain together while TJ fought through his earliest battles.
Over the years, TJ has grown into a familiar and joyful presence at MCTJ Night, often pictured smiling alongside Ronald McDonald and friends. His story represents the very reason the event exists, a reminder that behind every donation is a child, a family and a journey no one ever expects to take.
TJ’s experience reflects that of many families across Webster County and the surrounding region whose lives have been changed by Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks.
One such family is the Soldinie family of Fordland, whose son Sly was born at just 22 weeks gestation, turning their world upside down overnight. With Sly’s life hanging in the balance, the family found themselves living moment to moment, waiting for phone calls and updates that could arrive at any hour.
During those terrifying early days, the Ronald McDonald House became their refuge.
The House offered immediate access to their son during his most critical moments, allowing them to rush down the hallway to his side whenever needed. That closeness, they shared, meant everything. The calm environment, supportive staff and opportunity to rest helped them endure a 199-day NICU journey that otherwise may have felt impossible.
Another family whose story is being shared this year is the Herrell family of Niangua.
After a pregnancy marked by ongoing medical complications, their son Braxton was born prematurely at 29 weeks, weighing just 3 pounds, 8 ounces. Instead of holding their baby moments after birth, the family watched as Braxton was rushed to the NICU, surrounded by doctors and nurses.
When they checked into the Ronald McDonald House in Springfield, the emotional weight of the situation finally began to lift. The House provided warm meals after long hospital days, a quiet place to rest and a sense of normalcy amid the chaos. Their older children were able to play, sleep nearby and remain together as a family while Braxton fought through 67 difficult days in the NICU.
Today, Braxton is doing well, a reminder that even the most fragile beginnings can lead to powerful outcomes when families are supported through their hardest moments.
Stories like TJ’s, Sly’s and Braxton’s are why the Share A Heart Campaign continues to matter.
During the campaign, customers are invited to donate $1 or more during their McDonald’s visit and sign a paper heart that is displayed in stores. Every dollar donated stays local, supporting Springfield’s two Ronald McDonald House programs, which have now served more than 17,400 families since opening.
While the hearts themselves may be small, their impact is not.
Annual operating expenses for the Springfield Ronald McDonald House programs exceed $5 million, funding lodging, meals and supportive services that allow families to focus on what matters most, being present for their children.
MCTJ Night brings those stories to the forefront, turning a single evening into an opportunity for the community to take part in something meaningful. Whether through a donation, attending the event or learning more about the mission, supporters help ensure families like TJ’s, and countless others, never have to face medical crises alone.
