Supporting Families Beyond The First Goodbye

Posted

For nearly 13 years, On Angels Wings’ has been walking alongside families facing some of life's most difficult moments.

The Springfield-based nonprofit serves families whose children have a terminal diagnosis or who experience the loss of a baby after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Founder and Executive Director Michelle Cramer said the organization's mission goes far beyond taking photographs.

"Photography is just the first step," Cramer said. "Our goal is to continue supporting families for as long as they need us."

The organization's volunteer photographers provide professional photographs at no cost for families experiencing pregnancy loss, babies in neonatal intensive care units, and children living with serious medical conditions. Annual "journey sessions" also help families document milestones as children continue their medical journeys.

But Cramer said those photo sessions often become the beginning of long-lasting relationships.

On Angels Wings’ also offers grief recovery programs for adults, children's grief day camps called Legacy of Hope, family events, holiday photo sessions, and an annual "Making Memories Day" carnival designed to give families a chance to enjoy time together away from hospitals and medical appointments.

"We try to become an extension of their family," Cramer said. "Many parents tell us people don't always know how to continue supporting them months later. We want them to know we're still here."

The organization currently serves around 10 families in Webster County, including several in the Marshfield area. One local family has been connected with the nonprofit since before their son was born and continues to receive support years later.

Volunteers play a major role in everything the organization does.

While experienced photographers are always needed, Cramer said there are many other ways to help. Volunteers assist with fundraising events, serve meals at the Ronald McDonald Houses, help organize the annual carnival, pick up auction donations, greet families during photography sessions, and serve on committees or the board of directors.

"It's not just photographers," she said. "There are opportunities for almost anyone who wants to serve."

The organization is also preparing for its annual fundraising gala on July 25 at the Glass Place in downtown Springfield. This year's "Sequins and Spurs" theme combines western attire with an evening of dinner, live and silent auctions, music, dancing, and stories from families who have been helped through the organization.

To encourage attendance, On Angels Wings’ is offering a 25 percent discount on gala tickets purchased between June 29 and July 6. Buyers can use the code FLASH during online checkout.

Like many nonprofits, Cramer said summer can be a challenging time for fundraising, making both volunteers and financial supporters especially important.

More information about volunteering, donating, purchasing gala tickets, or learning about the organization's services is available through the On Angels’ Wings website.
