There’s something special about signing day at Strafford High School. Even if you’ve been to a dozen of them, it still gets you.
On March 3 at 2:30 p.m., friends, teachers, and family gathered in the high school gym to watch DeLainie Hedger take the next step. And this one feels a little extra meaningful.
She’s the kind of student every school hopes for. The kind you point to when younger kids ask what hard work looks like.
Her senior year, she earned First Team All-District honors and ranked second overall. That alone would be enough to brag about for a while. But she didn’t stop there. She’s been First Team All-Conference for two years running. Consistent. Steady. The real deal.
And then there’s that school record. A 74. Lowest round in school history. If you know golf, you know that’s not luck. That’s focus. That’s hours nobody sees.
She’s ranked in the top five percent of her class with a 4.0 GPA. Not “pretty good.” Perfect. She’s a member of the National Honor Society and serves as a leadership officer. She’s the Student Council Secretary. Part of the Leadership Team. Active in FCA. Involved in her church’s youth leadership. Somehow she makes it all fit.
And earlier this year, she was selected as a Southwest Electric Youth Tour delegate, representing the region in Washington, D.C. That’s not something that just lands in your lap. You earn it.
It’s about a young woman who has set a high bar in athletics, academics, and leadership, all at once.
Her family is proud. They should be. This community is proud, too.
March 3 will be about a signature on paper. But really, it’s about years of effort leading to one well-earned moment.
