Governor Mike Kehoe has declared a state of emergency as dangerous flash flooding continues across central, south-central and southeastern Missouri.
The declaration activates the Missouri State Emergency Operations Plan, allowing state agencies to work more closely with local officials and quickly provide resources where they are needed.
Over the past day, heavy rain has caused widespread flooding, damaged roads and campgrounds, and led to multiple swift-water rescues. Some areas have received between 6 and 12 inches of rain. Missouri Task Force 1 has also been deployed with rescue boats and specialized crews to assist emergency responders.
Forecasters warn that more heavy rain is expected through the weekend, increasing the risk of additional flooding. People are encouraged to stay weather aware, especially if they are camping, floating or living near rivers and streams.
Officials also remind drivers never to travel through flooded roadways. Just a small amount of moving water can sweep away a vehicle, making flooded roads one of the greatest dangers during severe weather.
The state of emergency will remain in effect through Aug. 10 unless it is ended sooner.
