Senator Hawley Questions MLB Treatment Of Christian Players

Posted

U.S. Senator Josh Hawley is calling on Major League Baseball to explain why several San Francisco Giants pitchers were reportedly warned after writing Bible verse references on their caps during the team's Pride Night event.

In a letter sent to MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred, Hawley said the league appears to be treating Christian expression differently than other social or political messages it has allowed in the past.

The Missouri senator pointed to references from Genesis 9, where the rainbow is described as a sign of God's covenant after the flood. Hawley argued that if MLB truly supports players' right to express themselves, it should not punish players for displaying religious messages.

He also criticized the league's claim that it does not allow writing on uniforms. Hawley noted that MLB previously approved messages such as "Black Lives Matter" and "United for Change" on uniforms and fields during the 2020 season.

Hawley said the issue goes beyond a single incident. He referenced a recent undercover investigation involving the Washington Nationals that allegedly revealed concerns about how a Catholic player's faith was viewed within the organization.

In closing, Hawley urged MLB to respond and reaffirm that players are free to express their religious beliefs without facing different treatment than others.
