Regional 4-H Western Heritage Shoot Draws Competitors to Marshfield

Posted

Outlaw Range, home of the Missouri Southern Rangers SASS club in Marshfield, hosted a 4-H youth shoot Saturday, May 30. Hondo’s Homecoming in the Holler, a 4-H Western Heritage Southwest/West Central Regional Shoot in memory of past youth shooting sports instructor and 4-H volunteer David Brooks, provided an opportunity for youth to gather and challenge their marksmanship through a cowboy western action shooting format. Hondo’s Frisco Railhead Rangers, the Southwest Missouri posse affiliated with Greene County 4-H Shooting Sports, organized the event.

26 4-Hers, 4 representing Webster County, attempted 6 cowboy stages. At the conclusion of the event, participants were invited by SASS members to participate in a fun shoot where youth were able to learn about and handle authentic period firearms.

Awards were presented in 4 divisions. Junior Division: 1st Reggie Burkhart (Christian Co), 2nd Sydney Taylor (Christian Co), 3rd Dillon Bergsieker (Lafayette Co). Intermediate Division: 1st Max Bergsieker (Lafayette Co), 2nd Will Mason (Webster Co), 3rd Tuker Cooley (Webster Co). Senior Rimfire: 1st Logan Pinkham (Cass County), 2nd Lawson Meridith (Adair Co, Oklahoma), 3rd Payton Taylor (Christian Co). Senior Central Fire: 1st

Collin Wright (Jackson Co), 2nd Mason Bergsieker (Lafayette Co), 3rd Charlie Thaller (Lafayette Co).

The purpose of the 4-H Western Heritage Project is to provide an avenue for 4-H members and adult leaders to experience the lifestyles and cultures of the American frontier during the period of 1860-1900 through a living history approach to learning while instilling the concepts of gun safety and personal responsibility.

Marshfield will be hosting the 2026 National 4-H Western Heritage Conference and Invitational Shoot July 27-30. In addition to the cowboy shoot, participants at this event will be presenting a unique persona/alias and taking a gun identification and history exam. Volunteers are requested to help judge, share homesteading and period activities with youth, and present period-appropriate workshops and seminars. Please email WHNat2026@yahoo.com to inquire about volunteering or providing sponsorship.

A program of the University of Missouri Extension, Missouri 4-H equips youth with the tools and experiences needed to thrive in agriculture, STEM, civic engagement, and more. Through hands-on learning and mentorship from dedicated volunteers, Missouri 4-H continues to prepare young people to lead with confidence and purpose.
