Public Comments Sought on Camping Permits

Posted

Camping on Missouri conservation areas could soon require a permit. The Missouri Department of Conservation is proposing new rules aimed at reducing litter, illegal activity, and long-term camping issues on its properties. The proposal received initial approval from the Missouri Conservation Commission during its May meeting.

MDC manages about 1,000 conservation areas statewide, with more than 320 offering free camping. While camping remains popular, officials say violations and warnings have increased sharply over the past decade. In 2015, staff issued 13 camping-related warnings and citations. By 2024, that number had grown to 183.

Under the proposal, campers would need a $5 permit that covers up to five days and up to 10 people. Larger groups would need additional permits, and limits would be placed on how often individuals can camp on conservation areas each year.

MDC officials say the permit system would help conservation agents identify campers, better monitor activity, and discourage misuse of camping areas. The agency also believes it could lead to safer and more enjoyable camping experiences.

The public will have an opportunity to comment on the proposal from July 16 through Aug. 14. The Conservation Commission is expected to consider final approval in September. If approved, the changes would take effect in early 2027.
