Nature lovers can experience one of Missouri's rarest landscapes during a special evening program hosted by the Missouri Department of Conservation later this month.
Last Light on Living Landscapes will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, at Mount Vernon Prairie. Participants will first meet at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center before traveling to the prairie.
The guided walk will explore one of the few remaining pieces of Missouri's native prairie. Before settlement, prairies covered about one-third of the state. Today, only about one-half of one percent remains.
Visitors will learn why these grasslands are important while enjoying wildflowers, native grasses, wildlife, and the sights and sounds of the prairie at sunset. The program is designed to be relaxed and family-friendly, making it a good fit for anyone who enjoys nature, photography or spending time outdoors.
Participants should bring water, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars or a camera if desired.
Registration is required. More information and registration details are available through the Missouri Department of Conservation's online events calendar.
