Marshfield Healthcare Story Started With One Family’s Vision

Posted

Healthcare in Marshfield has a pretty personal story behind it.

Gwendolyn Lawson, clinic manager at OCH Wellpoint Family Medical Clinic, says the roots of the clinic go back more than 20 years and started with a local family wanting to help fill a need in Webster County.

Her husband, Dr. Ward Lawson, grew up in Marshfield and returned home in 2001 after earning his doctorate in psychology from the University of Kansas. After opening Tri-County Psychological Services, he noticed something troubling. People were waiting months just to get medical care.

That led to research showing Webster County was medically underserved. So the family decided to do something about it.

The original Wellpoint Family Medical Clinic opened in 2003, offering care for patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors. Behavioral health services were included from the beginning.

In 2012, the clinic merged with Ozarks Community Hospital and became OCH Wellpoint Family Medical Clinic.
