Local residents will have an opportunity to help save lives later this month when the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks hosts a community blood drive at the Marshfield Senior Center.
The blood drive will be held Thursday, Aug. 20, from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the lower-level dining room of the Marshfield Senior Center, located at 427 W. Washington St.
The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks supplies blood, platelets and plasma to more than 40 hospitals throughout the region, including CoxHealth South and Mercy Hospital Springfield. Every donation collected locally stays in the Ozarks to help patients in area hospitals.
Michelle Teter, media relations representative for the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, said summer is often one of the most difficult times of the year to maintain an adequate blood supply.
"As temperatures rise, summer can become a challenging time for the blood supply, as fewer donations and increased hospital need can strain the local blood supply," Teter said. "Donating at the upcoming blood drive in Marshfield is a simple way to help ensure lifesaving blood is available for patients in your community when it is needed."
As a thank-you, everyone who donates will receive a premium velour beach towel while supplies last. Donors will also be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $10,000 dream vacation to the destination of their choice.
Anyone planning to donate should bring a photo ID, eat a healthy meal beforehand, and drink plenty of fluids.
Eligible donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, and must not have donated whole blood within the previous 56 days.
Appointments are encouraged to help reduce wait times. To schedule a donation or learn more, visit the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks website or call 417-227-5006.
