Learn How to Grow and Market Mouthwatering Watermelon

Posted

Anyone interested in growing bigger, better watermelons or learning how to market them will have a chance to do both during a University of Missouri Extension workshop on July 15.

The evening program runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at the MU Southwest Research, Extension and Education Center, 14548 Highway H in Mount Vernon.

The workshop begins with a classroom session before participants head outside for a tour of the center's watermelon demonstration plots. An early-season watermelon taste test is also planned.

Matthew Huchteman, MU Extension field specialist in horticulture, said the program will cover a variety of topics for both new and experienced growers. Participants will learn about selecting watermelon varieties, pest management, growing practices, extending the growing season, and current market opportunities in southwest Missouri.

The timing fits well with National Watermelon Month in July. MU Extension horticulturist David Trinklein notes that watermelon is made up of about 92% water, making it a favorite summertime treat. He also points to author Mark Twain's famous quote that anyone who has tasted watermelon "knows what the angels eat."

Advance registration is required. Those interested can register online or contact Huchteman at 417-358-2158 for additional information.

The workshop is open to anyone interested in growing watermelons, whether for home gardens, farmers' markets, or larger commercial operations
