A longtime Navy veteran is taking on a new leadership role with the Civil Air Patrol while encouraging more people to learn about the organization's mission.
Kevin Sidenstricker, who recently completed a four-year term as commander of the Civil Air Patrol squadron in Joplin, will assume command of Group 5 in southwest Missouri later this summer.
Sidenstricker spent 22 years in the U.S. Navy, including 13 years as a radar intercept officer in the F-14 Tomcat. Today, he volunteers with the Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.
The organization is best known for emergency response, search-and-rescue missions, disaster support, and youth development programs. Members train to assist during emergencies and use aircraft, ground teams, and drones to help locate missing people and assess storm damage.
Sidenstricker said one of the most rewarding parts of the program is working with cadets ages 12 to 18. He said the organization helps young people build leadership skills, learn responsibility, and gain confidence through hands-on training and aviation experiences.
The Civil Air Patrol is made up entirely of volunteers and welcomes both adults and youth members. Local squadrons across Missouri regularly train for emergency response while also serving their communities.
