From Ewing Ranch to Sourdough: Patrick Duffy Brings Star Power—and Heart—to Marshfield

Posted

A lot of folks walking through the Cherry Blossom Festival this year had the same moment.

They stopped. Looked twice. And thought… wait a second.

Is that Bobby Ewing?

It was.

Patrick Duffy made his return to Marshfield after visiting last year, and the reaction was about what you’d expect. But once people got past the double-take, the conversation felt a little different.

Not like talking to a TV star.

More like talking to someone who’s lived a full life and has a few stories worth sharing.

Duffy said acting wasn’t always the plan. Early on, he did what a lot of people do. Took whatever work he could find. Drove a delivery truck. Worked as a carpenter, just like his dad.

For a while, he figured that might be it.

Then, as he put it, “the acting bug bit.”

From there, things moved quickly. He was working on a show at MGM when a nearby production wrapped up. A producer named Leonard Katzman took notice, asked around, and eventually made a call.

That call led to Dallas.

And just like that, Duffy became Bobby Ewing.

He still talks about it like it was a gift. Talent mattered. But so did timing. And luck.

A lot of luck.

These days, life looks a little different. He still travels and meets fans, but his focus has shifted to something simpler.

Bread.

It sounds small, but there’s a story behind it. A sourdough starter that his family received in Alaska back in 1952 has been passed down ever since. More than 70 years later, it’s still going.

Duffy turned that into a business with a purpose. Every dollar of profit goes to charity. No exceptions.

It started in a garage. Now it’s expanding nationwide, with plans to reach thousands of stores. The goal is simple—help fight hunger.

Back in Marshfield, though, the focus stayed on the moment.

Fans got to meet someone they grew up watching. Hear the stories. Share a laugh.

And maybe walk away realizing it’s not just about the role that made him famous.

It’s about everything that came after.
