Michael Reynolds, a full-time firefighter with the Marshfield Fire Protection District, was recently awarded Career Firefighter of the Year at the department’s annual end-of-year banquet.
"I didn’t know I was in the running," Reynolds said. "It was kind of a surprise when they called my name. It’s a big honor to be recognized for hard work. I try to do my best every day when I come in, but I never expected this."
Reynolds, who moved to Marshfield from Maine in late 2023, joined the department as part of its transition to full-time staffing. Since then, he has become an integral part of the team. When asked about his experience since joining the department, Reynolds shared his appreciation for both the department and the community.
"I came from a larger area around Portland, Maine, and moving to a smaller town like Marshfield was a bit of a culture shock,” he explained. “But everyone here, from the people I work with to the community, has been incredibly welcoming. It’s been great getting to know everyone, especially since I didn’t really know anybody when I first arrived.”
Reynolds also spoke about the positive changes he's witnessed since the department became fully staffed. Though he joined during this transition, he recognizes the improvements that have come with it, particularly in terms of response times and overall service to the community.
"There have been a lot of positive changes, and it’s all been in service to the community. Reducing response times and being able to provide better service is always our top priority," he said.
As part of the department’s new schedule, Reynolds works two consecutive 24-hour shifts followed by four days off. The department's shift structure is designed to ensure adequate staffing while also allowing for rest time between shifts. In addition to responding to emergency calls, the department also focuses on proactive measures such as fire inspections and pre-incident planning for local businesses.
"We start our day by checking the trucks and making sure all of our equipment is in good shape. We also do routine cleaning and maintenance tasks, and depending on what’s going on, we may have special tasks like fire inspections. But it all comes down to being ready to respond when needed," Reynolds explained.
While Reynolds may have only been with the Marshfield Fire Protection District for just over a year, his dedication to the department and the community has clearly made an impact.
“Michael was chosen by the officers of the organization during review to receive this award. He moved here from Maine and he's just done an outstanding job,” said Marshfield Fire Chief Michael Taylor. “The guys enjoy working with him. He’s an excellent firefighter and this award was well-deserved.”
"I'm just very appreciative of the department, my colleagues, and the community. It’s been a real honor to be welcomed into this town and to be able to do the job that I love," he said.
Reynolds' award is a testament to the hard work and commitment he has brought to the department and the community, and his recognition is a proud moment for the Marshfield Fire Protection District.
