Brothers of the Brush competition returns for nation’s semiquincentennial

Posted

An old Webster County tradition is making a comeback this year as Marshfield revives the “Brothers of the Brush” beard-growing competition in honor of the nation’s 250th birthday.

The competition invites men across Webster County to grow their beards from February through July, with judging set to take place during Fourth of July festivities in Marshfield.

Signups for Brothers of the Brush will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, Feb. 16, at the Webster County Courthouse. Although the courthouse will be closed for Presidents Day, organizers will have the building open specifically for registration.

The event, which last took place during Marshfield’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2005, challenges participants to grow the longest beard possible without shaving or trimming until judging concludes on July 4. A separate category will be available for participants who already have beards at the start of the competition, with growth measured from the signup date through July.

“This is a great way to celebrate our roots and bring back a fun Webster County tradition,” said Reagan Inman, one of the event’s organizers. “With the nation’s 250th birthday coming up, it felt like the perfect time to revive something that brings people together and connects generations.”

Nicholas Inman, who was involved in the original Brothers of the Brush competition in 2005, said the event has always been about more than just beards.

“It’s about community pride, participation, and celebrating where we come from,” Inman said. “Bringing Brothers of the Brush back for the nation’s 250th just felt right. It’s something people remember, and it gives everyone a fun way to be part of the celebration.”

Inman added that several men who participated in the original competition are expected to take part again this year, creating a meaningful connection between past and present celebrations.

Men who want to support the event but prefer not to grow a beard can still participate by purchasing a shaving permit. The permit allows individuals to remain clean-shaven while still contributing to and being recognized as part of the program.

Entry into the Brothers of the Brush competition is $10, with shaving permits available for $12.

Judging will take place on July 4 in conjunction with Marshfield’s Independence Day celebration on the square. Final details regarding the exact judging time will be announced closer to the event.

Organizers emphasize that any interested participants are to attend the Feb. 16 signup in person, as registration will only be available during that time frame.

More information about the competition and judging will be released as the event draws closer.
