Board withdraws proposed Burn Restriction Ordinance

Posted

Plans to adopt a Burn Restriction Ordinance for the Marshfield Fire Protection District have officially been shelved following Monday night’s board meeting.

At the meeting, directors voted to withdraw the measure from consideration, ending months of discussion on the proposal. A special board meeting that had been scheduled for Aug. 28 was also be cancelled.

“The special board meeting for August 28th was not approved by the board of directors at tonight’s meeting and is therefore cancelled,” Fire Chief Michael Taylor said in a statement. “The board instead voted to withdraw the ordinance from consideration. No further meetings, discussions, or actions are planned for this topic.”

The ordinance, first introduced earlier this summer, would have set rules for open burning in the district’s unincorporated areas, including restrictions tied to National Weather Service Red Flag Warnings and severe drought conditions. Draft versions were revised several times after an early draft caught the public’s attention on social media, with the final draft reducing penalties to fines only and clarifying prohibited materials.

While the measure will not move forward at this time, the fire district previously said the intent was to provide clearer, more consistent guidelines on when burn bans could be issued. With the withdrawal, no new regulations will take effect, and existing state and county fire-safety laws remain in place.
