Wrestlers dominate NEO training camp

Posted

For the 10th year, the Marshfield Bluejays Wrestling team made the journey west to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma to attend the training camp held by six-time National Champion Coach Joe Renfro.

30 Bluejays made the trek to attend the three day camp, where attendees were given the opportunity to stay overnight in the dorms while training with Norsemen Coach Renfro and his staff.

“Staying in the dorms for Northeastern was a great team bonding experience, and a chance for team leaders to emerge,” said Head Coach Matt Holt.

Renfro is currently the Head Wrestling Coach at NEO. For over 20 years, he has built a resume of success, including a dual record of 218-42-3. Renfro has been named NJCAA National Wrestling Coach of the Year seven times. In the previous 19 years, his teams have never placed below seventh at the National Tournament. In 13 of those years, they finished in the top three

Day one included technique work with Assistant Coach Mays in the NEO A&M practice facility. The Bluejays were rewarded with this opportunity due to the loyalty of Marshfield’s wrestling program to the training camp.

“Coach Mays tailored his technique around the positions we felt like we needed the most work,” Holt commented.

Day two afforded wrestlers the opportunity to get hands-on, with teams competing in seven duals. Marshfield’s main varsity dual team went 5-0 at the event. Tanner Davidson and MJ Gritts went undefeated.

On day three, a takedown tournament was held with several Bluejays making the final rounds. MJ Gritts and Tyce Jones won the championship. Tanner Davidson and Johnathon McGlynn took home second place honors as well.

“We may have had more, but we had 30 kids,” laughed Holt. "It was chaos.”
