The United States welcomed a new citizen among its ranks last month, and she happens to be from our very own county. Alena Akulich, originally from Belarus, and now of Niangua, took her Oath of Naturalization and Allegiance to the U.S. on June 15, 2022. While still living in Belarus, an Eastern European nation bordering Russia, Alena and her husband, Dennis, took part in the Diversity Immigrant Lottery system. This program randomly selects up to 50,000 hopeful immigrant applicants to get visas per year, all from countries with low immigration rates to the States.
