Roundup Grant: helps preserve Veteran's memories

Starting in 1940 with only 17 members, the small group organized a temporary charter or membership with the American Legion and set up a post in Seymour. One of those members, C.O. Taft believed in the American Legion's Mission so much that he would lease some of his lands to erect an American Legion building. In the 1960s, the American Legion Post #306 building was officially built in Seymour.

The American Legion's mission is to preserve the memories and incidents of veterans in all wars.

For Post #306, the preservation is done in many ways, from providing color guards in Seymour's many parades and festivals, donations to various veteran programs or Seymour schools, and even holding an essay contest for Seymour's middle and high school students during Veterans Day.

Another way Post #306 helps preserve veterans' memories is by using flags.

Treasurer Bruce Denney for the American Legion Post #306 explains, "Starting three or four days before Memorial Day, we will put a flag on every veteran's grave. By doing so, we go to about 13 cemeteries in the southern Webster county areas."

After being used in several years of Memorial Day remembrance, these flags were in need of replacement. Being a non-profit organization, the #306 Post searched for local grants and applied for the Webster Electric Roundup Grant. The Roundup grant aided the post in the past regarding a raffle fundraiser.

The American Legion Post was approved for the grant. As a result, it will purchase higher-quality hemmed flags, meaning they will last much longer and be used at many future Memorial days. The flags will be ordered within 30 days and will arrive in the early months of 2023.

Denny expressed, "Thank you for supporting the ideals that we of the American Legion support." Thanks to the Webster Electric Roundup, the preservation of those who served our country can continue.
