Roundup Grant: Diggins serves community

Posted

Diggins is a small village with roughly a population of 314. Yet, despite this size, they have a strong sense of community. From music jam sessions and bingo nights to their recent groundbreaking to honor veterans, Diggins is always looking for ways to serve.

For the past few months, when people gather at the City Hall for their music jam every Tuesday, lunch has been served for free courtesy of Diggins.

“We serve on a donation basis. We do not charge for the meals.” tells Penny Bowers, City Clerk for Diggins. “It is open to the public and we have some regulars from Niangua, Lebanon, even Elkland. We have been serving about 45 people per week and it has been really successful.”

Serving this many people with potential is excellent, but there is one issue. The City Hall’s kitchen. Bowers explains, “The kitchen is an older one with little space that also needs updated appliances.”

Anyone who has remodeled a kitchen or any part of their home knows how expensive it is. For a smaller town like Diggins, it could be draining. Diggins knew the best option to cover the remodeling was looking for grants. Previously, Diggins received grants from the Webster Electric Roundup to help with paving a walking path and playground equipment. They applied for the roundup grant again and were awarded $10,000.

Construction is set to begin in December or early into the new year after the holidays. Thanks to the Roundup Grant, Diggins will be able to serve the Webster County area and others better.

“We are grateful to Webster Electric for allowing us the opportunity to apply and receive the grant,” expresses Bowers. “There are not enough words to say how appreciative we are to be able to do this.”

We are halfway through this series, as this story is the third of the Fourth Quarter Webster Electric Roundup Grant winners. To learn what the last two recipients are working on with their grant funding, continue picking up the Marshfield Mail.
