Rotarians spread Christmas cheer

Posted

For the last three years, local Rotarians have joined forces and pulled from their own personal funds to provide Christmas gifts to strangers in our community. Just after Thanksgiving, a group from the Marshfield Rotary Club got together and had a white elephant sale, where they raised right at $2,400 towards their goal to make Christmas a bit brighter for a few local families.

“We got together with one of our Rotarians who is Mike Henry, who also happens to be the school superintendent, and sought out a couple of families from the school who, without any assistance, would not have Christmas this year,” said Rotary President Chris Robinson. “So they’ve got toys coming. They've got candy coming. They've got new clothes coming. Mom and Dad have some special things that they would have liked to have had... not been huge items, but some nice things that, you know, people need niceties at Christmas, right?”

In their three years of giving, the club has raised over $7,000 to give Christmas to Marshfield families. They pool the funds, set out for a few days of serious shopping for little boys, girls and their parents, and anonymously donate them to the school.

“Teachers and the counselors all report back to one person at the school, who then says okay, this is going to be who we will go with this year. These families need assistance most based on the criteria that they use,” he explained. “We drop them off at the district office to keep things completely anonymous for the family, they're receiving it from one point of contact with the school.”
