For the first time in several years the Lions Club was able to partner with the Marshfield Junior High for the annual Lions Club Peace Poster Contest.
The contest, which has been going on for over three decades, is an international contest that is open only to kids aged 11, 12 or 13. Students must create a poster, without using any words, for the competition.
However, despite the contests long running history, it’s been a long time since the Marshfield club has had any posters to compete with.
“It’s been a long time…I got a hold of Jennifer this year and we are trying to bring it back,” explained Lions Club Treasurer and twenty plus year member Kevin Cantrell. “My wife is in the Lebanon club and they do it too. Conway has a club. There are 46 clubs in our district.”
Each club selects a winner and submits it into the district convention. “We will take it to the district convention,” explained Cantrell. “There will be a district winner, then we take it to state…then it goes to nationals followed by international.”
“I had 17 kids show interest, but then only four kids, when it was all said and done, gave them (the posters) back,” shared Jennifer Lashley, the Junior High Art teacher who introduced students to the contest.
“They have to come up with a theme,” explained Cantrell. “They can’t use any letters…the picture has to represent what they are trying to explain.”
The winning poster was inspired by an Ameila Hart quote. “A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.”
The four students who submitted posters are: Ella Taylor, Charlee Coltrane, Ada Sabo and Marley Cantrell. And the first place winner Ella Taylor.
“I was kind of surprised, but really happy about it too,” shared Ella Taylor when asked how it felt to find out she won first place. And for her inspiration, “I thought the quote was a good example of how kindness and compassion spreads and gave me the idea to draw a tree with its roots spreading out and the leaves were hearts to represent kindness,” explained Ella.
“Ella Taylor won first place (for the club level),” shared Lashley. “Charlee Coltrane got second and those two will get gift cards (from the Lions Club).”
