Bear grads celebrate commencement


Laclede County R-I celebrated the graduation of 68 students Saturday, May 20 at the Lebanon Civic Center. This group of seniors were awarded over $900,000 in scholarships for their future pursuits in education.

The Conway band performed as the students entered the commencement before Principal Tyler Vestal delivered an emotional welcome for the graduating class.

Senior Breanna Thompson delivered an opening prayer before Salutatorian Gracie Vestal addressed the class. The senior band members then joined in performing “Time To Say Goodbye” by Gilroy. Valedictorian Makenna Shifflett then delivered a speech citing Dr. Suess quotes throughout the monologue.

A senior class video presentation organized by Gracie Vestal left the audience in tears featuring a slideshow of graduates baby photos to senior class portraits with background audio including “Never Grow Up” by Taylor Swift and “Good Riddance” by Green Day.

Conway school students, administrators and community members then recognized veterans as well as those actively serving with a “Veterans Day Salute” by the Conway band. Senior Cooper Mullins was also recognized for his decision to serve in the United States Marine Corps, receiving a standing ovation from his fellow graduates and those in attendance.

Principal Tyler Vestal then presented the Class of 2023 and diplomas were delivered by School Board President Mr. Kevin Dampier.

Graduates wearing gold cords were members of the National Honors Society. White cords denoted the top 10% of the graduating class. Red cords were worn by A+ recipients and blue cords were worn by participants fo the GOCAPS program. Maroon cords denoted LTCC and CTE certification. Silver cords denoted LTCC honors and maroon and white cords were worn by those who were honored by Skills USA. Conway FFA members also wore cords which were national blue and corn gold.
