Attempted burglary stopped Christmas Eve

Justin Michael McCormack, of Marshfield, was arrested Christmas Eve for 1st Degree Attempted Burglary. 

Officers were dispatched to the possible burglary in progress at 10:59 p.m. on Christmas Eve and made contact with the suspect, who was attempting to kick in the homeowners back door to gain entry to the home. According to the probable cause statement, after detaining the suspect the arresting officer asked him if he was trying to break into one of the apartments, to which he responded, “Not aggresively.”

The statement says the victim was awakened by a loud banging noise on the front door. The victim entered the kitchen with his gun, as the banging continued. The victim then said they turned on the light in the hallway when he suspect began banging on the back door of the apartment. The victim said he then called 911 as his wife and two children were in the apartment at the time. 

The arresting officer took photos at the scene of the crime which showed wet grass and a muddy footprint on the door with the print showing small hexagon shapes. He then looked at the soles of the suspects shoes and saw similar hexagon patterns, matching the print. 

McCormack was arrested and transported to the Webster County Jail, where his shoes were seized as evidence. An initial appearance was made in front of Judge Justin Michael Evans on Dec. 26. According to casenet, McCormack is scheduled for a bond reduction hearing Wednesday, Jan. 3.

McCormack’s criminal history shows prior arrests for 1st degree burglary, domestic assaults, drug possession and alcohol related offenses.
