Evan Skidmore (age 9) and Katie Skidmore (age 7) are pretty excited for the Webster County Fair this year, but not for the reason most kids are excited. This year, Evan and Katie will be showing their ducks at the fair.
“We started showing cows because our cousins did it so we wanted to try it. We liked that but then they got too big. So we thought showing ducks would be easier,” explained Evan. “They showed bottle calves for three or four years, and then we didn’t get bottle calves last year,” clarified mom, Melanie Skidmore. “We had ducks and they wanted to show.
This will be Evan and Katie’s second year showing ducks.“We put our ducks in a cage and they (the judges) will walk around with a microphone and talk like ‘this duck has a nice crown’,” explained Evan.
Evan and Katie both have their own ducks that they show at the fair.
“I have a Ruin and she (gestures to his sister) has a Pekin,” said Evan.
“Katie won grand champion waterfowl last year, and I think he (Evan) had reserve last year,” reflected Mom. “I got a wood thing (plague) and it had carving on it,” explained Katie “and I got a blue ribbon,” added Evan.
How do Evan and Katie prepare their ducks for the big day at the fair? “We give them baths,” laughed both kids. “We put them in the stock tank. We’ve had to chase a couple, all five jumped out of the stock tank.”
