Saturday, Jan. 28, was a big day for robot fans. It was the FIRST Tech Challenge League Tournament. 28 schools from all over Missouri and Kansas participated, with the top five moving on to the Missouri Kansas Championship on Mar. 4, 2023. Two of the team hoping for a spot was non-other than Strafford's varsity team, Arrow Flight, and Freshman team Broken Arrow.
The day was filled with excitement from students, teachers, and families with back-to-back matches. Robots went back and forth, racing to complete circuits by placing cones on poles. When the teams met all 42 rounds and scores were tallied up, the five teams that were moving on were the following:
13092 - Central Processing Units from Springfield's Central High
20323 - Sigma from Springfield's Central High
6168 - Maniacal Mechanics from Rolla High School
7678 - Eldon Gearheads Maroon Team from Eldon Middle School
17206 - BuzzBotFTC1 from Lebanon Middle School
While neither team from Strafford would not be moving on, they did not leave the tournament empty-handed. Arrow Flight, the varsity team, won the robot design award.
"It was a weird year, " told Chris Peterson, Strafford's robotics teams coach. "This was by far our best robot design to date, but like in any other sport, just couldn't string the wins together at the right time. The Freshmen had an outstanding year and learned a lot. I'm really excited to see what they do next year."
We look forward to seeing what next year holds for Strafford's robots and hope this program finds its way to other schools in the future.
