The season of giving

Posted

Blankets and socks are on the Marshfield Crusaders wish list. The team will accept donations from Nov. 10 to Dec. 10. The blanket and sock drive is part of the baseball program’s mission to be able to donate socks and blankets for all sixty residents at the Webco Manor nursing home.

According to coach Ray Fryman the community of Marshfield has supported the baseball team tremendously. When the team was presented with the question “How can we give back?” baseball mom  Amanda Adams, suggested the idea of the collection.

“Baseball is a fantastic sport,” stated Fryman. “But, life is bigger than baseball. The community is so good at supporting the team and I have always talked to the boys about how important it is to serve and be leaders.”

Consisting of twelve players that are in the 14 and under division, the team always steps onto the field with the cross on their uniform.

“I always try to communicate with the boys about being selfless,” added Fryman. “How they can serve others and to lead by example with a Christ like character. We wear the cross and that is the reason I do this, I want to be able to build good quality boys in our community.”

The summer competitive team was just recently promoted to playing as a majors team, meaning they are a team that does not produce a lot of mistakes as well as being able to play at a very high level. The boys on the team set the goal of reaching the status before they entered high school, and achieved that goal this past season.

Being able to reach their baseball goal, the team has now switched mindsets in the off season. Setting a new goal of being able to provide a set of socks or a blanket for each resident, with the hopes of being able to gift both items to the residents.

“This is a way for us to give back,” said Adams. “A way for the boys to say thank you.”

After the collection time period, the team will then come together at the coach’s home to wrap the gifts.

Stephanie Fryman mentioned that because of Covid the team will take the precaution of not delivering to the residents in person but instead wrap the presents and write notes that will be presented to the home at the Christmas party on Dec. 16.

“The socks will always keep their feet warm which the residents just love,” Susan Wilson, actives director at Webco Manor, explained. “At their age the residents get cold really easily and they will wear lap blankets. When Christmas time comes around they all absolutely love being gifted new ones.”

Collection bins are located at Iron Web Fitness, Two Gals Bar & Grill and The Marshfield Mail office. Items may be dropped off at these locations or given to a player on the Crusaders team.
