Strafford’s Special Finance Meeting

Posted

On Thursday, Aug 25, the City of Strafford alderman held a public hearing and special meeting regarding the upcoming financial year. The meeting started with a public hearing open to any citizen wanting to give their thoughts or questions on the tax levy. The city would place the levy in question on all real property in Strafford starting this year after the city was recently assessed and found the property values had increased.

"Real" property, by definition, is real estate, like any home or land owned, thus taxed. When the State auditor's office assessed Strafford, inflation was one factor that played into the tax levy increase. As a result, the levy will increase to three cents per $100 property assessment. Most land and homeowners will not notice any changes to their taxes.

With no questions or concerns raised, the alderman closed the public hearing, put the levy increase to a vote, and approved it.

With the hearing and levy completed, the board moved into a budget study session. Martha E. Smartt, the City Administrator, discussed the planned budgets for next year's projects, contracts, and purchases with the council members. These include a new utility vehicle for the city development, street paving, and a Wastewater contract with Springfield. After much discussion, the session ended with Smartt recapping the budgets and any suggestions the council members provided. These suggestions included a new basketball hoop for the Croxdale Park and upgrades to the portable restrooms. However, these park improvements and other suggestions require more research before the city can finalize anything.

After wrapping up the session, the meeting ended with a closed session and then adjourned for the evening.
