Scam calls target COOP customers

Posted

Customers of Webster Electric Cooperative are being warned of scam callers threatening to shut off services. Several customers have reported phone calls demanding immediate payment in order to avoid disconnection.

“Turn around and call us if you receive one of these calls,” said General Manager Tom Houston. “We are never going to call anyone up and demand payment or threaten to disconnect.”

When it comes to late bills, notices are sent via mail if there’s a risk of disconnection asking customers to make arrangements with the COOP.

“We will occasionally call if it’s their first time being disconnected… but every few months we are seeing these scammers and they are even able to spoof our phone number to look like it’s the COOP calling,” Houston added. “Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do about it.”

Those with questions or concerns can reach Webster Electric at (417) 859-2216.
