The beloved Little Miss and Mister Firecracker contest is returning to the Marshfield square this Independence Day—and there’s still limited space available in each category for local kiddos to join in on the fun!
After years without the fan-favorite tradition, the contest made a comeback last year thanks to the Marshfield Mail and is back again for another patriotic celebration. The contest will take place on Friday, July 4, on the courthouse stage on the west side of the square, just before the start of the annual parade.
There are three age categories for contestants:
• Newborn to age 2
• Age 3 to 5
• Age 6 to 10
Each division is limited to just 12 contestants and spots are filling fast. Contestants will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis, so early registration is encouraged.
Children in the newborn to age 2 category will be judged on outfit, props, and a brief interview with their parent or guardian. Contestants in the 3–5 and 6–10 age groups will be judged on outfit, an interview, and a required 60-second talent demonstration. Talents may include singing, dancing, hula-hooping, rope tricks, and more. Judges will be looking for creativity, spunk, and sass!
Registration is $60 per child, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the Safe Harbor Victim Assistance Program’s land fund to build a domestic violence shelter. Once the online form is completed, an event organizer will contact you to confirm your child’s spot. The form will close as soon as all divisions are full.
Contestants should arrive on the square at 8 a.m. to pay their fee and prepare. The first group will begin at 8:15 a.m., and the event will wrap up by 9:40 a.m., just in time for the parade.
Winners in each age category will receive a prize basket from KLM Sales, along with a sash (provided by The Sports Shack) and a tiara or crown (courtesy of the Marshfield Mail). We will also have bows for the winning girls, donated by Leikien Wilson, owner of Tally Bows. Last year’s winners of the 6-10 age group have been invited back to help crown this year’s royalty.
