In 1977, the small school of Elkland closed its doors for the final time. At the time, the building was over 40 years old and the school faced financial problems. The 80 elementary students who currently attended were consolidated into Marshfield schools. Prior to just serving elementary age students, the building previously taught up to high school.

The oldest graduate present was Slyvia Snodgrass, age of 97, and graduated from the Elkland school in 1948. The last graduating class of Elkland schools was the class of 1959.
