Breast Cancer: Integrating Holistic Medicine with Conventional Treatment

Posted

In the second part of the Marshfield Mail’s focus on breast cancer awareness, this week the focus is on treatment. Most people know that cancer treatment typically requires some type of chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of both.

In recent years, there has been a new approach to treatment of cancer that combines both conventional and holistic medicine.

“In integrative oncology, I’m always going to work along side conventional treatment,” shared Katrina Bogdon, ND who specializes in Integrative Naturopathic Oncology. “First and foremost before we want to combine anything that’s natural, we want to make sure it’s going to safely integrate with conventional treatment.”

“Some herbs and supplements can definitely change the way that drugs work. It can increase their toxicity or their effectiveness. So we want to make sure whatever they is using is safe, or isn’t going to increase progression of the breast cancer,” explained Bogdon about how she determine which supplements are best for clients while receiving conventional treatment.

Bogdon, who owns Our Healing Roots located in Seymour, MO, has been practicing Naturopathic medicine for 15 years.

When working with clients who are battling breast cancer, Bogdon has five objectives she focuses on:

“…First is keeping them safe in the process of integrating natural approaches. The second piece is-what can we do to increase the effectiveness of their treatment….the next piece is how can we mitigate and reduce the side effects of their treatment; a lot of these patients are overwhelmed by the number of medications they are doing. They want to see if there is something less invasive than taking more drugs for drug side effect…(next) I look at what other markers are in the body that might help increase survival or help reduce recurrence…and then the last piece that I’m looking at is how do we help their overall health.” shared Bogdon.

Bogone shared that one of the best things people can do when they are diagnosed with breast cancer (or any cancer) is to make sure people have social support in their life. “Social support is more protective than diet, exercise and independent of other factors. In a meta analysis they found that there is a 50% increase likelihood of survival if people have strong social relationship when they are diagnosed with breast cancer.”
