Saluting a servant heart

Posted

Arthur Rich, of Springfield passed away on April 12 after a lingering illness, leaving behind a legacy that’s admirable to all. While Art Rich was not a veteran, he dedicated a lot of his time to helping those who have served. He’s been described by many as a man who didn’t like the spotlight shone on him and had a servant heart.

“Of all the people I’ve met at Whispering Oaks, Art was my favorite,” said Bonnie Taylor, with Whispering Oaks Golf Course. “Of all the people I’ve met in my lifetime, Art was among the most special.”

Art was passionate about hosting an annual tournament to recognize veterans and the proceeds from the tournament would benefit their organizations. In his honor, the golf course has decided to continue that tradition. The Art Rich Salute to Veterans tournament will be an annual tournament at Whispering Oaks Golf Course.

“Art was not a veteran, but that is what he insisted on doing – hosting a tournament to benefit others – he was truly a remarkable person,” Taylor said.

“My dad didn’t serve but he really respected those who did,” said his daughter, Linda Putman. “I think he loved hosting that tournament out of respect for the sacrifices service men and women make and just from his love to help others.”

As an avid patron of Whispering Oaks Golf Course, Art developed a close friendship with many local golfers throughout the years.

“He and his wife Dee lived in Marshfield for many years and he loved this community. He just wanted to do something to help and get the community involved,” Putman added. “That’s why he started the tournament back in 2015.”

The 2020 tournament proceeds benefited the Wounded Warriors Project. With minimal donation to Whispering Oaks for course use, all proceeds from this year’s event will benefit a similar organization that supports veterans.

“I don’t think we can do enough to help show our veterans support,” said Taylor. “Anything we can do, I think we should. Whether it’s sponsoring the tournament, donating prizes or just signing a team up and playing. Everyone should come out and support our veterans in memory of Art’s giving heart.”

The Marshfield Mail will have more on the Art Rich Salute to Veterans tournament as they emerge.
