Trial date set for shooting in Seymour

Arthur Medley will appear in court for a pre-trial conference on May 15, followed by a three-day jury trial that will start on July 10 with Judge Chuck Replogle presiding, according to CaseNet.

The Seymour resident has been charged with a felony of Armed Criminal Action and a Class A felony of First Degree Assault following a shooting that occurred last year.

According to a probable cause statement from the Webster County Sheriff's Office, on Mar. 17, a deputy responded to a Dispatch call after they received a report of someone's boyfriend being shot in the head. Before arriving on the scene, the deputy was informed that the suspect later revealed to be Medley, had been taken into custody by a trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol. When the deputy arrived, EMS was on the scene giving aid to the victim, who had been shot through the cheek. The victim was taken to a hospital in Springfield and was in stable condition.

After initial observation of the scene, the deputy spoke to the victim's girlfriend, who explained to the officer the events leading up to the shooting. She also showed the deputy text messages between her and Medley, which mentioned that he wanted to see her alone before traveling back to her home. When she and the victim arrived, an argument broke out between the victim and Medley. After exchanging words, Medley shot the victim. After speaking to the victim's girlfriend, the deputy went to Medley and read him the Miranda rights. After Medley confirmed his rights, he told the deputy he would not make a statement. He was then taken to the Webster County Jail and booked for the charges mentioned earlier in the story.

Other deputies arrived to investigate the crime scene. At that time, a witness came forward and gave a written statement explaining that they were asleep when the shooting occurred until they heard a knock at the door. It was Medley who told them that he had shot the victim in self-defense.

Currently, Medley is in jail, where he will go through a three-day jury trial starting on July 10.

If convicted, the sentence for a felony of Armed Criminal Action is 3 to 15 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections. For the Class A felony of First-Degree Assault, Medley could be sentenced from 10 to 30 years or face a lifetime sentence in MODOC.
