Tis’ the season

Posted

Christmas is right around the corner and this is always when I start to find myself being excited for the wrong reasons. I get excited to open the presents under the tree and to give gifts to my loved ones. I get excited to eat the delicious food my grandmothers on all sides prepare as my fiancé and I head to their homes on the designated day. I get excited to spend time with loved ones during the holidays.

Yes while all of those things are wonderful, they are not the reason I am celebrating. Lately, I have been attending a church here in Marshfield with my fiancé’s family instead of attending my own family church and the pastor has spent the past few weeks elaborating on the meaning of Christmas.

Jesus Christ was born by the Virgin Mary to save me. That is the reason I am celebrating. Mary carried the Son of God and gave him life so that he could give the rest of us the gift of eternal life.

Isn’t that just something? Like John 3:16 states,  “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” He gave his son. His one and only son so that I could be saved.

We exchange the newest and shiniest things to each other during this time and we see the magic Santa bring us during the Holiday. But, we don’t need anything else, God gave us the greatest gift of all: Jesus. He was born in order to pay the price for the things that I have done wrong and that is a gift that I will never be able to repay.

During the recent Sunday service we watched the Christmas Program put on by the children in the congregation and at the very end they exclaimed for us to “Go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ was born”.

We know that through belief in Christ we are daughters and sons of God and that Heaven will one day be our homes. That is something worth screaming for, to run and to tell everyone in your path that Jesus was born for us to have eternal life.

So, as Christmas approaches and you sit down to eat with your loved ones do not be afraid to talk about the reason we all gather, it’s not for the presents, or Santa, it’s to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and that deserves all of the attention in the world.

As the saying goes, you can’t spell Christmas without Christ. Merry Christmas!
